Order a new or replacement certificate for marriages or civil partnerships that took place in South Gloucestershire.

Email us on registrationservice@southglos.gov.uk with the following information:

  • full name of the person or people
  • date of the marriage or civil partnership
  • where the ceremony took place, for example the name of the church or approved premises
  • your name, address and contact phone number

We will phone you to take the payment by debit or credit card (Visa or Mastercard) and arrange delivery or collection of the certificate. Make sure you include a daytime contact phone number in your email.

Fees and timescales

Standard service

Each certificate costs £12.50.

Certificates will be issued within 10 working days and sent by second class post. Alternatively you can collect from Kingswood Civic Centre once we let you know it is ready.

Priority service

If you need the certificate quickly, we offer a priority service which costs £38.50.

If the certificate is ordered by midday, it will be sent out the same day, or you can collect up until 4pm from Kingswood Civic Centre.

If you order certificates after midday, we will process your order the next working day.

Marriages or civil partnerships outside South Gloucestershire

If a marriage or civil partnership took place outside South Gloucestershire, you will need to contact the register office where the ceremony took place. Enter the venue postcode to find the correct register office (GOV.UK).

To order certificates for ceremonies that took place in Bristol, contact the Bristol register office on 0117 922 2800 or apply online.

If you are researching family history, a full range of general register office indexes are available on microfiche at the following locations: 

  • Birmingham Central Library 
  • Bridgend Reference and Information Library
  • The British Library
  • City of Westminster Archives Centre
  • Greater Manchester County Record Office
  • The London Metropolitan Archive
  • Plymouth Central Library 

As well as the birth, marriage and death indexes for the whole of England and Wales, indexes for recent events such as the adopted children register, civil partnerships and births, deaths and marriages of British citizens that have been registered overseas are also available. 

It is not possible to buy certificates at any of the above locations, although some may provide internet access to the general register office online certificate ordering service.
