South Gloucestershire has many local nature reserves and woodlands for both people and wildlife.

They support a wide variety of habitats including woodlands, wetlands, meadows and grasslands, rivers, lakes and ponds. Many also support protected, rare or uncommon species.

Community nature reserve programme

As well as managing local nature reserves and woodlands, we fund work with Avon Wildlife Trust to support the South Gloucestershire Community Nature Reserve Programme.

Community nature reserves are made up of connected gardens, green spaces, school grounds and other local areas that help wildlife thrive across whole neighbourhoods.

The programme encourages residents, community groups, schools and parish councils to take practical action for nature where they live.

Unlike our local nature reserves, community nature reserves are not designated places to visit. Instead, they are networks of wildlife-friendly spaces managed by local communities.
