Eligibility

To become a private hire vehicle operator you must:

  • operate from a premises in South Gloucestershire
  • have the necessary planning permission for your premises
  • have the right to work in the UK
  • undergo a DBS (criminal record) check
  • have employers and public liability insurance if required
  • meet our ‘fit and proper’ person criteria

How to apply

You can apply online. Payment will be required as part of the online application process.

Supporting information required

You will need to upload copies of your:

  • insurance documents (if the operating premises is open to the public)
  • DBS certificate
  • proof of your right to work in the UK

You may need to provide a tax check code. Details of this and how to get one if required is covered in the application process.

What happens next

We aim to process your application within 6 weeks.

We will assess that you are ‘fit and proper’ person. Things we consider for this include:

  • skills, knowledge and experience
  • criminal record
  • previous history as a licence holder

Once your application has been processed we will contact you by email.

You cannot start to run your private hire business until you receive the licence.
