The footbridge over Kennedy Way in Yate will be removed on the weekend of 5 June 2026. A road closure will be in place during this time.

The bridge, built in the early 1970s, is now showing signs of age and deterioration. It is being taken down to remove the risk of future structural problems and to keep people safe.

The bridge will not be replaced due to the cost.

Road closure details

To allow the work to be carried out safely, Kennedy Way, from its junction with Normandy Drive to its junction with Heron Way, will be closed to traffic from 8pm on Friday 5 June until 6am Monday 8 June.

Alternative route: A432 (part unaffected), B4059, Peg Hill, B4060, St Johns Way, A432 (part unaffected) and vice versa.

The bridge removal is likely to create some noise as it will involve heavy machinery in operation.

Pedestrian access during and after the bridge removal

Pedestrians will continue to be able to cross Kennedy Way using existing routes via the:

  • underpass near Love Lane and Lilliput Court (around a 10‑minute walk)
  • signal‑controlled Toucan crossing near the Tesco roundabout (around a 12‑minute walk)

Signed diversion routes will be in place.

Future pedestrian crossing

We are considering adding a pedestrian crossing at the Kennedy Way / Heron Way junction. No dates have been set, and a public consultation will take place before any decision is made.
