Switchover to digital landlines
The UK’s phone network is being upgraded to digital technology, with completion expected by early 2027.
What it means
The digital switchover means most providers will move customers from old analogue (copper) landlines to new digital phone services.
For most people and businesses the switchover will be straightforward. Many customers have already moved to digital services when upgrading to full fibre broadband.
Your phone provider (for example: BT, Virgin Media, O2) will contact you before the change to explain what you need to do.
This may include:
- plugging your phone into your broadband router instead of a wall socket
- checking whether devices connected to your landline – such as telecare sensors and some burglar alarms – are compatible with digital lines
If you do not have an internet connection, your phone company will ensure that there is still a ‘landline only’ service offered.
If you have questions, contact your provider directly.
If you use a telecare device
Devices such as fall monitors and personal alarms may require checks or upgrades before the switchover.
If you or someone you know uses telecare devices, contact the landline provider. They will give you additional support for the switchover and check if your existing equipment is ‘digital-ready’.
Find more information about telecare devices on the digital phone switchover hub.

Emergency calls
Digital landlines do not work during power cuts. Phone providers must make sure telecare users and vulnerable people have alternative support. This can include:
- hybrid phones that switch to mobile networks – free for vulnerable users
- Battery Backup Units (BBU) which are designed for long term emergency use
If you do not have any other way to call 999, tell your phone provider now.
A mobile phone is recommended as an emergency backup.
