School crossing patrol service
We are responsible for the school crossing patrol service. This helps make travel to and from school as safe as possible for children and adults.
School crossing patrol officers can stop traffic for anyone wanting to cross the road provided that the officer is wearing the correct uniform and working at their official site.
It is an offence under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 if you do not stop when signalled by a school crossing patrol.
If you do not stop, you could:
- be fined up to £1,000
- get 3 penalty points on your driving licence
How crossing sites are selected
When we are deciding where to put school crossing patrols we will survey the area. This will include doing a vehicle and pedestrian count.
We put school crossing patrols where they are needed most. This may not be directly outside a school.
Each site will have signs and road markings and regular monitoring and supervision by our road safety education team.
Report a problem with a school crossing patrol
