Major maintenance work takes place between May and December 2025 on the A38 flyover at the junction with Gypsy Patch Lane, Filton.

It requires varying lane closures on the approach roads and slip roads over that period, as well as the complete closure of the flyover from 4 to 31 August. There will also be several individual overnight closures at other times.

About the project

The flyover is a 114m long, three span reinforced concrete bridge which was built in 1978.

Whilst it has been inspected and regularly maintained during its lifetime, after nearly 50 years it now needs significant work to make sure it can remain in use without permanent weight restrictions, lane closures or carriageway closures.

What it means for local traffic

During the 8 month project there will be varying lane closures and turning restrictions at certain times, the suspension of some on-street parking spaces and the temporary relocation of the northbound slip lane bus stop.

Both northbound and southbound slip roads will be reduced to one lane only for the whole period of the works. Access under the flyover will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.

There will be full closure of the A38 over the flyover in July and August. Limited overnight closures will take place 1 night each in June, August, September, October and November. North and southbound slip lanes will be reduced to one lane for the whole period of work. The right turn and u-turn lanes from the northbound slip road will be closed from June to December. The u-turn lane from the southbound slip road will be closed for the whole period of work. The on-street parking on the southbound slip lane will be suspended for the whole period of work also. The northbound Gipsy Patch Lane bus stop will be temporarily closed from June to December.

We are phasing the work to minimise disruption as much as possible, however there will inevitably be some disruption to traffic, and journey times may increase.

There will also be some unavoidable noise in the local area. Activity on site is being limited to weekdays between 8am and 5pm with a small amount of occasional evening and overnight working.

Access to businesses and residential properties will be maintained at all times.

Project timetable

Work began in May 2025 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2025, however as with any outdoor civil engineering works, this timeframe is subject to change.

Flyover closure

There will a complete closure of the flyover to all traffic between 4 to 31 August.

While the main flyover is shut, routes underneath and slip roads will remain open to help keep traffic moving.

This work, scheduled during the quieter school summer holidays, involves replacing the bridge’s expansion joints — vital components that ensure its safe operation.
