The next phase of major maintenance work will take place between February 2026 and February 2027 on the A38 flyover at the junction with Gypsy Patch Lane, Filton.

Routine structural inspections of the flyover had identified areas of urgent work to refurbish the structure, the bridge bearings, northern expansion joint and concrete repairs to the abutment wall which were completed last year.

Funds from the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority have been secured so these repairs can be carried out over a quicker timescale rather than using our own more limited funds.

The programme of works will involve essential maintenance to the remaining areas of the flyover and include the ramp concrete walls, waterproofing and resurfacing of the flyover deck and replacing the south buried bridge joint. Once complete this would conclude the refurbishment of the flyover.

It is important that works are carried out as water damage will continue causing corrosion to parts of the retaining walls which if left untreated could mean weight restrictions have to be in place on the flyover in the future.

About the project

The flyover is a 114m long, three span reinforced concrete bridge which was built in 1978.

Whilst it has been inspected and regularly maintained during its lifetime, after nearly 50 years it now needs significant work to make sure it can remain in use without permanent weight restrictions, lane closures or carriageway closures.

Project timetable

Work will begin in February 2026 and is scheduled to be completed by February 2027, however as with any outdoor civil engineering works, this timeframe is subject to change.

From 16 February to end of July we will need to close Lane 2 southbound on both the on slip and off slip. Lane 1 southbound over the A38 flyover will need to be closed whilst the lane 2 slip lane is closed.

There will also be a closure of the flyover in the summer months to undertake works to the flyover deck.

The diagram below shows estimated closure times as the scheme progresses which are:

  • 16 February to 18 July – southbound slip road lane 2 closure for ramp wall concrete repairs
  • 16 February to 7 August – A38 Flyover southbound lane 1 closure for deck waterproofing replacement
  • 7 August to 28 August – A38 Flyover mirrored lane 2 closures for deck waterproofing replacement
  • 20 July to 25 July – A38 Flyover full closure for south joint replacement
  • August to February 2027 – A38 Flyover northbound lane 1 closure for deck waterproofing replacement
  • 19 September to 20 September – A38 Flyover full closure for deck waterproofing replacement
  • September to February 2027 – northbound slip road lane 2 closure for ramp wall concrete repairs
