You must have a rod fishing licence if you are fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel with a rod and line.
You can get a fine of up to £2,500 if you are fishing and cannot show a valid rod fishing licence when asked.
You can buy a 1 day, 8 day or 12 month licence online at GOV.UK. Children under 13 do not need a licence.
Where to fish
Rod licences are not the same as permits. You will need a permit if you want to fish on private land.
Get Hooked provide a list of where to fish and details of the permit you may need for each location.
Environment and wildlife
It is important to preserve our open spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Fishing tackle can harm ducks, swans and other wildlife so make sure you dispose of fishing tackle and litter.
