Asset-based community development
Asset-based community development (ABCD) is a way of working with communities that focuses on their strengths and assets, rather than on deficits and problems.
It supports neighbourhoods to become more connected and drive the changes they want from within, to help build stronger, more resilient communities.
ABCD in South Gloucestershire
Our key ABCD principles are:
- working together
- unlocking community strengths
- tackling inequalities
- investment and sustainability
We have worked with partners to develop an ABCD framework to help people act collectively to tackle the issues that matter to them.
This framework and examples of what ABCD looks like in action in South Gloucestershire can be found in the Stronger Together leaflet.

Resident based decision making
ABCD and asset-based approaches support Community Conversations, the council’s new approach to the way we talk, listen and respond to local people about the things that matter to them.
Both approaches put residents at the centre of decision making about their area, encouraging participation and getting local views heard.
This will help shift the balance of support for communities towards prevention of problems and reducing the inequalities they face.
