Renew your vehicle licence
A hackney carriage or private hire vehicle licence must be renewed every year.
Before your current licence expires we will email you a renewal letter which contains a unique reference number. You will need this to start your online application.

Conditions of renewal
Standard vehicles can be re-licensed for up to 10 years from the date of first registration, and non-standard vehicles for up to 15 years, if they met all other licensing requirements.
You will need a 6-month fitness test certification if your vehicle is between 3 and 10 years old. For vehicles over 10 years old you will need to email us taxis@southglos.gov.uk for more information.

Supporting information required
As part of the online application to renew your licence you will need to upload copies of the:
- V5 registration document, with the correct taxation class
- Insurance certificate (including hire and reward), valid at licence issue date
- MOT certificate from a DVSA approved testing station dated no more than 4 weeks before the renewal application date
- fitness test certificate dated no more than 4 weeks before the renewal application date
- 6 month fitness test certificate (for vehicles between 3 and 10 years old)
- meter calibration certificate from an approved meter company (for hackney carriage vehicles)
It is your responsibility to renew your licence before it expires. You can find the expiry date on your licence.
If your licence has expired you will need to apply for a new vehicle licence. You must not carry out any licensed work until the full process has been completed.
How to renew
You will need the reference number from your renewal letter. Payment will be required as part of the online application process.
If you work for more than one operator, choose the one you work for most of the time.
What happens next
We aim to process your renewal application within 6 weeks.
Once your application has been processed you will receive the licence via email.
The validation disc for your vehicle will be posted to you. The vehicle cannot be used as a taxi or private hire vehicle until you receive the new disc.
