Good neighbours initiative
We have teamed with Age UK to encourage more South Gloucestershire residents to check in regularly with neighbours who may be vulnerable and isolated.
As we age it can become harder to keep a home properly maintained or we may need simple adjustments to keep living safely and independently at home. Older people can find it hard to ask for help or simply don’t know who to ask.
Our good neighbours initiative aims to leverage community-based support to help the most vulnerable older people in our communities and to identify and tackle loneliness.
We need people to be good neighbours and reach out to help older people living nearby, especially ones who live alone. Ways you can make a difference are:
- drop in for a cup of tea and a chat
- offer to help mow the lawn or mend simple things at home
- ask if they need groceries or prescriptions collected
- give them a lift to a medical appointment or to one of our community welcome spaces
- help set up a video call with their family
- brighten their day with some flowers or a tasty treat
- leave a note if they seem uncomfortable with face-to-face conversations
If you are worried about a neighbour who is aged over 50 and you think they might be struggling you should:
- phone: 01454 411707
- email: info@ageuksouthglos.org.uk
Age UK South Gloucestershire has already helped many older residents, some who were living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Watch a video to learn some of their stories.
