You can get free advice and support for you to learn basic online skills at selected libraries. This includes:

  • one-to-one sessions with one of our trained volunteer Digital Champions
  • a course with SGS College
  • self-guided online learning

One-to-one sessions

In a one-to-one session with a Digital Champion you can get help with topics such as:

  • using email
  • staying safe online
  • using online searches
  • completing online forms
  • creating documents

Where and when

Bradley Stoke Library: Mondays and Tuesdays 11am to 12.30pm
Cadbury Heath Library: Saturdays 9.30am to 11.30am
Downend Library: Wednesdays 1pm to 3pm
Emersons Green Library: Fridays 1pm to 3pm
Hanham Library: Tuesdays 10am to midday and Thursdays 2pm to 4pm
Hawkesbury Upton Village Hall: alternate Fridays 2.30pm to 4pm*
Staple Hill Library: Tuesdays 2pm to 4pm
Thornbury Library: Thursdays 10am to 1pm
Yate Library: Saturdays and Tuesdays 10am to midday

*Sessions at Hawkesbury Upton Village Hall are at the same time as the community library. Upcoming dates: 22 May.

How to book

There are several ways to book your free session which generally last around an hour, you can:

Computer courses by SGS College

SGS College currently offer free 16 week courses at:

  • Downend Library on Tuesdays
  • Bradley Stoke Library on Wednesdays
  • Winterbourne Library on Thursdays

The courses start in September and February. However, you are welcome to join partway through the course if spaces are available.

All sessions run from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Each week covers different topics, such as:

  • keyboard and mouse skills
  • introduction to word processing
  • using the internet to search for information
  • understanding email, messages and attachments
  • shopping online and how to shop safely
  • introduction to Copilot and using Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • sending electronic greetings cards

The course is aimed at beginners, and is also suitable if you have some basic computer skills and would like to refresh or improve your knowledge.

SGS College also run a progression class at Bradley Stoke Library on Wednesday afternoons, which is suitable if you are more confident.

Self-guided online learning

You can book to use a computer in the library to access Learn My Way, a website of free online learning for beginners, helping you develop digital skills to make the most of the online world.
