A432 Badminton Road M4 overbridge closure
Last updated 18 September 2023
National Highways has closed a section of the A432 Badminton Road to carry out detailed structural investigations of the M4 bridge adjacent to the A4174 ring road.
Initial survey work has revealed accelerated deterioration and cracking to the southeast underside of the bridge structure.
Further investigations by National Highways are necessary to reveal the full extent of the work required. The earliest a decision can be made regarding future restrictions is likely to be December 2023.
For safety reasons, the bridge must remain closed to all motorists until these investigations and assessments are completed. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists.
What this means for local traffic
Motorists are advised to use the following diversions:
- northbound via the B4465 Westerleigh Road up to A46 and into Yate via A432
- southbound in reverse
National Highways is also encouraging all traffic to use the A420 and A46 for Yate from the Hicks Gate direction on the A4174, and motorway users to use the M4 junction 18 for Yate, rather than the M32 and A4174.
From 6pm Thursday 27 July 2023 the following roads are temporarily closed to through traffic:
- Coalsack Lane
- Ruffet Road
- Cooks Lane
Access will be maintained for pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and to residential properties and business premises along these roads.
4-way temporary traffic lights have been installed at the crossroads between Henfield Road and Westerleigh Road. These will be replaced with regular traffic lights from 14 August as indicated below.
These restrictions will remain in place for the foreseeable future but there are no plans to make them permanent.
Hambrook lights junction
The right turn at Hambrook lights on the ring road will remain closed as the arrangements in place are the most efficient way of moving traffic through the junction along the ring road. This was demonstrated during the previous disruption associated with the Bromley Heath Viaduct work.
Free shuttle bus service
National Highways is funding a free shuttle bus for the communities affected by the closure of their bridge.
We have appointed bus operator Transpora and have agreed for the route to go to Yate Park and Ride before travelling along the A432 to the bridge closure. It is then a short five-minute walk over the bridge to access m3 and m3x services.
Residents can also use the shuttle to connect with the Y1 and Y2 services for onward travel.
Check the timetable and route map on the Transporabus website.
The shuttle bus is a trial which will initially run until the end of December 2023.
One Network currently shows the A432 road closure until February 2024.
National Highways has estimated their inspection and assessment work will not be completed before December 2023. We would expect the end date for the bridge closure to be updated once more is known about the extent of the deterioration of the bridge.
